Ketchikan: Salmon, Totems, and Totem of a Good Time on an Alaskan Cruise

Totem-ific Encounters
Ketchikan boasts an incredible collection of totem poles, those colorfully carved wooden sentinels that stand as silent storytellers. We visited Totem Bight State Park, where towering totems depict whales, bears, and mythical creatures, each symbol rich in meaning. The Saxman Native Village offered a glimpse into Tlingit life, with a chance to witness totem carving demonstrations by skilled artisans.
A Hike with a View (and Maybe a Bald Eagle)
Ketchikan isn't all about shops and history. We strapped on our hiking boots and tackled the Rainbird Trail, a moderate hike that winds through the Tongass National Forest. The rainforest canopy provided a welcome escape from the summer sun, and the reward at the top? A breathtaking panorama of Ketchikan and the surrounding islands. Keep your eyes peeled – spotting a majestic bald eagle soaring overhead is a common occurrence!
Hooked on Ketchikan's Charm
No Alaskan adventure is complete without some fresh seafood, and Ketchikan delivers. We savored melt-in-your-mouth salmon in all its delicious forms: grilled, smoked, and even in a creamy chowder. For a local twist, try some halibut cheeks – a delicacy not to be missed!
